Narrations from the Salaf on Ramadan

Bismillah

Jabir bin Abdillah (radi Allahu anhuma) said: “When you fast, then your hearing should fast, and your sight and your tongue from lying and sinning. Let there be a tranquility and calmness over you on the days of your fasting, and do not make the days that you are not fasting and the days you are fasting equal.”

Some of the Salaf used to say: “Indeed Allah, the Most High, has made the month of Ramadan as a competition for His creatures, in which they may race with one another to His pleasure, by obeying Him. Thus, one group comes first and so they prosper and another group comes last and so they fail.”

Al-Zuhri said: “When Ramadan comes, then it is [the time for] reading Qur’an and feeding others.”

Hafsah bin Sireen said, “Fasting is a shield for the one who does not rip it apart - and backbiting will rip it apart.”

Some of the Salaf would say: “For me to invite 10 of my companions and offer them iftar is more beloved to me than freeing 10 slaves from the children of Isma’eel.”

Abu Al-Aliyah said: “The one who is fasting is in a state of worship - as long as he does not backbite- even if he is sleeping on his bed.”

Ubaydah Al-Salmani said: “Be cautious of the two that break the fast: backbiting and lying.”

Mujahid said: “If you want your fasting to be complete and sound, then stay away from backbiting and lying.”

It was narrated that when Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) and his companions were fasting, they would sit in the masjid and say: “let’s purify our fasting.”

Assalamoalaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatohu

May Allah SWT in His Grace and Mercy guide you always and sustain you always on His Straight Path and make this duniyah and your kahirah full of light from His Light. Jazaki Allah khairen fid duinyah wa al akhirah!

Alhamdulillah min fadhle Rabbana we have been covering Ramadhan in our halaqas and i just wanted to share two very enlightening things inshAllah so very super from our Lord truly He is the Lord of Majesty and Grandeur and abundant Favours

1 there are three kinds of fasting: a) saum al awaam general fasting which the majority of people do that is fasting from food and drink b) saum al khushu’u the one who fears His Lord fasts from both physical sustenance and abstains from sinning and c) saum al khas (i really hope i got this rite cuz my arabic is none too great so forgive me please!) the one who fasts with his heart, that is, all day long he is remembering his Lord, as per the admonitions above.

2 Allah SWT has made abundant promises as per the Quraan and the Sunnah for this month for those who fast with faith and hoping for the reward:
forgiveness of all sins; fasts and the Quraan will intercede on his behalf on the Day of Judgement; taking out souls from the Hellfire; Ar Rayan the Gate of Heaven reserved for those who fast; two happinesses one at the time of breaking the fast (acceptance of all invocations) and one on the Day when we meet our Lord - a pleasure so great that none can imagine it

MashAllah only The Lord of the Day can give such abundant favours and blessings. May Allah SWT bless you all in this month and make it a source of Light and abundant favours and joy; may He fill your hearts with His most humble and ardent Dhikr; may He shower His Favours upon you and may Al Mu’min grant you all each and every promise which He has prepared for His believing slaves in this most wonderous month

SubhanAllah, they all mention backbiting…or did you purposely do that? :P

» Amatullah said: { Aug 11, 2010 - 05:08:58 }

Nope, there was a whole part of the book just on backbiting and fasting! SubhanAllah, I was very very surprised. There was one story of a man who came to complain to a scholar about another man, and after he was finished, the scholar told him to go do his wudu again because he broke it after backbiting. SubhanAllah!
