Revive A Sunnah: Constant State of Wudu
Bismillah
One of the greatest aspects of our Deen is the purification of a Muslim and its relationship with our Emaan. The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said in the well-known hadeeth, “Purification is half of emaan.” [Muslim]
Since we are in winter now, you may need an extra push to keep renewing your wudu because of the cold weather. InshaAllah the purpose of this post is to serve as a reminder as well as some motivation :) Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says in the ayah of Wudu,“Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favor to you that you may be thankful.” (5:6)
The Sunnah of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam is to constantly be in a state of Wudu. Once a companion entered upon the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam and greeted him. The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam did not return the salutation to him until he performed ablution. He then apologized to the companion saying: I disliked remembering Allah except in the state of purification. (Sunan Abi Dawood, Saheeh)
Benefits of Wudu:
1) Expiation of sins.
- “He who performs the Wudu perfectly (i.e., according to Sunnah), his sins will depart from his body, even from under his nails.” [Muslim]
- He who performs Wudu like this, his previous sins will be forgiven and his Salat and walking to the mosque will be considered as supererogatory act of worship.” [Muslim].
- “When a Muslim, or a believer, washes his face (in the course of Wudu), every sin which he committed with his eyes, will be washed away from his face with water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is committed by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin his feet committed will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water; until he finally emerges cleansed of all his sins.” [Muslim]
2) The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam will recognize his Ummah from their traces of Wudu
- Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam went to the (Baqi`) cemetery and said, “May you be secured from punishment, O dwellers of abode of the believers! We, if Allah wills, will follow you. I wish we see my brothers.” The Companions said, “O Messenger of Allah! Are not we your brothers?” He said, “You are my Companions, but my brothers are those who have not come into the world yet.” They said; “O Messenger of Allah! How will you recognize those of your Ummah who are not born yet?” He said, “Say, if a man has white-footed horses with white foreheads among horses which are pure black, will he not recognize his own horses?” They said; “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “They (my followers) will come with bright faces and white limbs because of Wudu’; and I will arrive at the Haud (Al-Kauthar) ahead of them.” [Muslim]
3) The Believers will be recognized by their traces of Wudu on the Day of Judgment
- “On the Day of Resurrection, my followers (or Ummah) will be summoned ‘Al-Ghurr Al-Muhajjalun‘ from the traces of Wudu’.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Imma Nawawi rahimahullah explains this name,
“The word “Ghurr” is the plural of “Agharr” which means shining or white. It is used for animals (like a horse), i.e., a white mark on its face. Here, it refers to that radiance which will issue from the brows of the believers on the Day of Resurrection and which will make them prominent. Muhajjalun is from Tahjil which also means whiteness but it is used for that whiteness which is found on all the four or at least on three legs of a horse. Here, it refers to that light which will shine through the hands and feet of the believers because of their habit of performing Wudu’. This means that the believers among the Muslims will be distinguished from other communities by virtue of the radiance issuing from their faces, hands and feet on the Day of Resurrection in the same way that a horse with a white forehead is easily distinguised from other horses.”
4) Wudu is a radiance and the Believers are encouraged to increase in it.
- Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu said, “Whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
5) The adornment of a Believer in Jannah will reach up to where the water reached his body.
- “The adornment of the believer (in Jannah) will reach the places where the water of Wudu reaches (his body).” [Muslim]
6) Saying the supplication after wudu is a means of entering Jannah
- “Whoever of you performs Wudu carefully and then affirms: `Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharika Lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa Rasuluhu [I testify that there so no true god except Allah Alone, Who has no partners and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger],’ the eight gates of Jannah are opened for him. He may enter through whichever of these gates he desires (to enter).” [Muslim]
7) Preserving wudu is a sign of emaan.
- “… and no one preservers their wudu except a Believer.” [Ibn Maajah, Saheeh]
8) Performing Wudu in hardship effaces the sins and elevates the ranks
- The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Shall I not tell you something by which Allah effaces the sins and elevates ranks (in Jannah)?” The Companions said; “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Performing the Wudu thoroughly in spite of difficult circumstances, walking with more paces to the mosque, and waiting for the next As-Salat (the prayer) after observing Salat; and that is Ar-Ribat, and that is Ar-Ribat.” [Muslim] Imam Nawawi rahimahullah says,
“Hardship and unpleasantness here stand for the uneasiness that one feels while performing Wudu’ in severe cold. To wait for the next Salat after offering a Salat is regarded as Ribat for the reason that by so doing, a person who is particular in offering Salat keeps himself constantly engaged in the obedience and worship of Allah to keep Satan away from him.”
With these benefits in mind, make it your habit to constantly be in a state of wudu inshaAllah. Remember these ahadeeth during these cold days to motivate yourself to keep up this sunnah, and with Allah is the greatest reward.
May Allah ta’ala make us among those who constantly purify themselves, inwardly and outwardly. Ameen.

JazaakumAllahu Khayran for this very beneficial reminder. Like the new site design Masha’Allah. Would it be possible to change the styling for the comments from all UPPERCASE to normal? (lol, without getting too technical, if you see “strtoupper” in your theme editor (http://php.net/manual/en/function.strtoupper.php), change it to like “ucfirst” (http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.ucfirst.php). Other than that, this design looks pretty legit :)
wa iyyakum.
lol, i just noticed how funny the caps look. inshaAllah I will try and change it. Jazaak Allahu khayran.
Yes alhamdulillah I think I found a permanent design for Tayyibaat :) finally! I change it so often.
Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullah
SubahanAllah! JazakAllahu khair for this reminder sister. Staying in constant wudhu also keeps you away from sins. It’s a good practice to always do wudhu before you leave the house.
Assalam Alaikum
JazakumAllah khayr for this beneficial reminder.
I would like to mention two things so that there is more benefit inshAllah:
1) The part of the hadith “Whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so” is not from the saying of the Prophet but rather from the saying of Abu Huraira, and it was combined with what the Prophet said by some of the narrators (in the science of hadith, it is called mudrajah). So the words of the Prophet peace be upon him end at “… from the traces of Wudu’.” and whatever is after that in the hadith are the words of Abu Huraira may Allah be pleased with him, which is the statement “Whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so”. Many scholars have mentioned this such as Al-Mundhiri, Ibn Taymiyah, Ibn Al-Qayyim, and Al-Albani among others. So please make note of this and indicate in the post above that the statement “Whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so” is the saying of Abu Huraira and not the words of the Prophet peace and blessings upon him.
2) In a part of a hadith, the Prophet peace and blessings upon him said, “… and no one preserves their wudu’ except a believer.” [Shaykh Al-Albani graded it as Sahih in Sahih Ibn Majah, hadith # 226 and 227]
This hadith shows the importance and virtue of being in a constant state of wudu, may Allah make us from those who are in a constant state of wudu. Ameen
My mom used to always tell me about making Wudu’ before going to sleep and I found out, just today in fact, that this is recorded in Sahih Bukhari (#1.247 amongst many other Ahadith on Wudu’ at http://www.scribd.com/doc/9361787/Shahih-Bukhari-About-ABLUTION)
P.s. The all caps makes it look like everyone is yelling, so I agree with brother Arif if it is possible to change it back to “normal”.
JazakumAllah khayr.
wa alaykum salam wa rahmatullah
jazaak Allahu khayran akhi, I did not know it was mudarraj. InshaAllah I will make the correction.
Please have some patience with the caps, my computer illiteracy is making it quite difficult. inshaAllah khayr!
brother Arif, yes I remember learning that sunnah a little while ago as well. I also remember hearing about a scientific study done about how putting water on your face/body before going to sleep calms the nerves and helps one sleep better. Indeed Allah is Most Wise. InshaAllah keep it up, sadaqah jaariyah for your mother as well.
Jazakallahu khairaa .Mashaallah.I remember reading a hadith about Bilal radhiallahuanhu being constantly in state of wadu and our beloved prophet sallalahualahisaalam heard his footsteps in jannah.
Wa iyyakum sister Amatullah. Come to think of it, there is a benefit for having the all caps thing, and that is if some one actually wants to yell, they can’t. lol
JazakumAllah khayr sister Ummahmed for reminding us of yet another sunnah which is to pray two rak’ahs after making wudu, and here is the hadith which you were referring to:
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Bilal, “O Bilal, tell me which is the deed in Islam in which you put most of your hope, for I have heard the sound of your sandals in front of me in Paradise.” Bilal said, “I do not do any deed in which I place more hope than this: I do not purify myself at any time of night or day, but I then pray as much as Allah decrees I should pray.” (Agreed upon)
Alhamdulillah it’s fixed now :)
Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaah,
Excellent reminder. Another benefit of always refreshing your wudhu according to people to perform Ruqya is that it is a means of protection against the the Jinn entering a person. I’m not sure if there is a hadeeth about this but if you read the book “An incisive challenge to the evil magicians” by Wahid A Baly he mentions it in there.
Site looks really amazing now Masha’Allah - May Allah bless this site with loads of Khayr!!
Bismillah alhamdulillah for the words of encouragement and reminder by ALLAH message came straight to my home that is my heart. Jazakallahu khairan inshaALLAH we will maintain our state of wudhu.. :)
Salaam u alaikum wr wb,
Dear Amatullah,
So how can we make sure that we are performing wudhu in a way by which all our past minor sins are forgiven? And does the Hadith about the adornment of the Ahl ul Jannah indicate that we can wash up to our legs in wudhu and stuff. would that not be bid’ah?
And, can u please do a write-up about the signs of Allah’s displeasure or anger upon a person and how to avoid it? And can u also plz do tafseer of Surah Sad: verse 35?
And, lately, i’ve been looking for a good tafsir book. i want one which is neither too concise nor too much in detail. And i want to purchase one which comes in one volume. Can u plz recommend me one?
Please reply.
Jazak Allahu khayr.
Zainab.
Jazkallah great effort
KEY TO SALAH N PARADISE
Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said,”They key to paradise is the salah and the key to the salah is ablution.”

[Sunan Tirmidhi #4]
Jazaakallahu khairun! Just needed that extra push of motivation.
