Characteristic of the Qur’an #9: Rooh
Bismillah
Allah azza wa jal says in surah Shura ayah 52:
And thus We have sent to you Rooh from Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Qur’an) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path.
Allah azza wa jal refers to the Qur’an as a rooh in this ayah. Rooh means a spirit or soul; when it is there it gives life to something. Imam Tabari rahimahullah states this rooh is true life and a mercy.
Imam Sa’di rahimahullah states in his tafseer: Just as the rooh gives life to the body, the Qur’an gives life to hearts and souls. With it, the heart lives to rectify its affairs of the dunya and deen. Whatever is in it is a source of great good and abundant knowledge.
Just as we cannot survive without our rooh, we cannot survive without the Qur’an.
Nor are (alike) the living (the believers) and the dead (the disbelievers). Verily, Allah makes whom He wills to hear, but you cannot make hear those who are in graves. (35:22)
