Characterisitic of the Qur’an #8: Furqaan

Bismillah

Alhamdulillah, after a long hiatus from Characteristics of the Qur’an posts, here is a new one :) I ask Allah for the tawfeeq to complete posting what is beneficial.

Allah azza wa jal says in the first ayah of surah Furqaan:

Blessed be He Who sent down the criterion to His slave that he may be a warner to the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinn). (25:1)

Furqaan is from farq, which literally means to separate or tear apart. Furqaan is on the structure of fu’laan (mubaalaghah/intensification) so it means that which divides and separates in a great number and great way. Furqaan means to separate in such a way that there are two distinguishable sides; they cannot be confused with eachother.

How does it separate? Imam Sa’di rahimahullah says in his tafseer:

Allah revealed the Qur’an as a separator (faariq) between the halaal and haraam, between the guidance and the misguidance and between the people of happiness from the losers.

The Qur’an separates every haqq (truth) from every baatil (falsehood), it clearly outlines what is right from what is wrong.

The Qur’an is also called Furqaan because its revelation was divided; it was not revealed all at once. Allah ta’ala says:

“And (it is) a Qur’an which We have divided (into parts), in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages.” (17:106)

My favorite ayah in relation to this characteristic/theme:

(8:29)

O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you Furqan a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty. (Muhsin Khan explanation)

And SubhanAllah, what an easy and accessible furqaan we find if we open Al-Furqaan.

And indeed We have put forth every kind of example in this Quran, for mankind

Indeed Allah is the Most Merciful, and for Him is all praise!
