Good post. Thank you.

There is this dangerous misconception regarding Qadar that has spread among some people. They think that all of their lives have been written for them, that good and bad people are born as good and bad and that they have no choice in the matter.

This is in direct contradiction with the Quran. Allah rewards and punishes OUR actions. What kind of silly circus would life be if everything was already written for us? The Quran goes to great lengths to demonstrate our difference from other creations. We aren’t programmed to only obey (like angels) or disobey. We have been given free choice.

Qadar are things that happen to us which we have no control over. Like earthquakes, accidents and losses. HOWEVER, we are free how we respond to these, whether we stay with Allah AW or we reject Him. And this is the basis of the Quran’s reward and punishment system.

Muhammad Al-Ghazzali makes this simple analogy for Qadar: “We are in a ship (life) that is controlled by the sea and its waves (Qadar). But we are free in how we behave inside the ship and how we respond to the constant changes.”
